Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 opened to strong reviews, but it is not automatically the best shooter to buy this week. It opened on 23 October 2026 with an 86 Metascore on PC, while Battlefield 6, ARC Raiders, Delta Force and Counter-Strike 2 each answer a different question about price and format.

Infinity Ward’s game shipped on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 on the same day. Launch reviews praised the campaign and multiplayer, singling out the Hajin map in DMZ. They also flagged a shaky campaign finale, matchmaking and spawn issues, and a DMZ mode that is no longer free. Below, we compare six shooters on cost, format and fit.

What the launch reviews actually say

Metacritic’s 86 hides a spread. The PlayStation 5 page shows 89, the Switch 2 page had no Metascore yet, and one outlet’s score was revised during the week: GameSpot expanded its campaign review into a fuller review now scored 8, still labelled “Review In Progress” at the time of the roundup. Steam sentiment was strongly positive in the first days. Critics see a confident, complete package, with flaws concentrated in online infrastructure and monetization rather than the core shooting.

Why format matters more than score

A Metascore cannot tell you whether you want a campaign, a 64-player vehicle battle or an extraction run. Battlefield 6 and Delta Force’s Warfare mode sell scale; ARC Raiders and Delta Force’s Operations mode sell tension and loss; Counter-Strike 2 sells repeatable, economy-driven rounds. Modern Warfare 4 sits in the middle: a campaign plus quick, arcade-style matches. If you do not play both halves, the 69.99 euro price is harder to justify than a free download.

The cost-to-try angle

Launch week is also trial season. Battlefield 6 had a free trial and reportedly a Game Pass window around the time Modern Warfare 4 shipped, ARC Raiders ran a free weekend and a 50% discount in early October, and Delta Force and Counter-Strike 2 are free. That makes Modern Warfare 4 the only game here where you pay full price before knowing if the format suits you. If you are undecided, sample a free option first and see whether the first-week problems are patched.
