Phantom Blade Zero is the best-reviewed new action game of the week, but it is not the right purchase for every fan of boss-driven combat. It launched on 29 October 2026 on PS5 and PC at about 88 on Metacritic. Sekiro, Black Myth: Wukong, Nioh 3, Stellar Blade and Devil May Cry 5 each suit a different taste in style and price.
Launch reviews praise the combat and bosses and mark down the story and some technical issues. Below, we compare six action games on style, reception and cost.
What the launch reviews actually say
The headline numbers are consistent, but the range is wide. Roundups report 88 on Metacritic and 91 on OpenCritic, with no negative review but scores from 60 to 100. Eurogamer’s 60 cites balance problems. Game Informer’s 9.5 and TheGamer’s 100 sit at the top. Praise clusters around combat flow, weapon variety and bosses. Complaints cluster around the story, repetitive regular enemies, boss fights that run long and, in RPGamer’s view, progression systems that lose force in the second half.
It is not a Soulslike
Several reviewers stress that Phantom Blade Zero is not a traditional Soulslike. Game Informer says it is not one despite challenging bosses and checkpoints, because difficulty options make it more forgiving and defeated enemies do not respawn. Reviewers compare it with Sekiro, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. For buyers, Nioh 3 is the closer fit for stat builds and loot, and Sekiro for precise parry duels.
The cost-to-try angle
Gagadget reports the standard edition at $59.99 on Steam and a Digital Deluxe edition at $69.99, with PS5 buyers in Europe paying about 10 euros more than on Steam. That matches Black Myth: Wukong’s list price and is double Devil May Cry 5’s. If you are unsure about the genre, an older entry costs far less. Reported technical problems are a reason to wait for patches before paying full price.
